An undergraduate minor in the teaching of English to nonnative speakers is available to those preparing to teach English either within the United States or overseas. In either case, it provides basic knowledge and skills needed by those wishing to teach immediately upon receiving their BA, as well as a firm basis for graduate work in the field. When taken in conjunction with an education major designed to prepare teachers of elementary, middle, or secondary school children in some other subject area, this minor provides the necessary background for endorsement by the Illinois State Board of Education as an ESL teacher in the public schools of Illinois.
