ESL
Service Courses
Eight ESL courses, ranging from intermediate to advanced levels, are
offered to help graduate or undergraduate students currently enrolled at
UIUC acquire the academic English language
skills they need in order to operate successfully within the university
environment. Course placement is determined by the UIUC ESL
Placement Test. In addition, courses are regularly provided for international
teaching assistants to help them develop the language and oral proficiency
skills they need to teach effectively at UIUC. There is also a course designed
to introduce visiting international faculty to American English and culture.
Specialized courses for international programs on campus are designed on
request. The ESL service courses are taught by graduate students and regular,
full-time faculty, under the supervision of faculty members of the Division
of English as an International Language.
