Homework:Read pages 518-522(stop before 31C) in Simon & Schuster Handbook.Bring your book to class!
Day 1
Activity A:Whole
Class Discussion/Brainstorm with Web on Board(5
minutes)
What is plagiarism?Why,
when, where, and how do people plagiarize?According
to the reading how can it be avoided?
Activity B:Identifying
Plagiarism(20 minutes)
In groups of three, have them decide which examples are plagiarism when compared to the original and state why or why not.Then, go over as a class using the overhead.
Activity C:Whole
Class Discussion(10 minutes)
As a class, discuss the answers to Activity B.
Activity D:Divide class into three groups:quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing.Each group will be responsible for different sections of Chapter 31.
Homework:Each group will read and take notes on the following sections in Simon & Schuster:Quoting:522-528, Paraphrasing:528-532, and Summarizing:532-536.They will be given discussion questions and make mini-presentations to the rest of the class during the next class period.Bring your book to class!
Day 2
Activity A:Small Group Discussion(10 minutes)
Groups will separate into like groups (2 groups of each).Each groups will be given a set of questions covering their topic.They will prepare to present their findings to the rest of the class.
Activity B:Group
Presentations(30 minutes)
Each topic group will have 6 minutes (3 minutes per
small group) to present information about their topic.As
they are presenting, students will take notes.Students
may ask questions after each group is finished presenting.
Activity C:Pass
Out Article on Opening Can of Worms(5
minutes)
Pass out handout on "Differences in Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summary" and "Plagiarism and the Worms of Accountability."Tell them that they must read the second article and paraphrase the paragraph for homework.Explain what "opening a can of worms" means.
Homework:Look over the first handout.Then read "Plagiarism and the Worms of Accountability" and Paraphrase the paragraph indicated using the guidelines on p. 529 in Simon & Schuster.They should type up the paraphrase and bring two copies to class.Bring your book to class!
Day 3
(If time, quickly review elements of a paraphrase--students can use as a reference when peer editing!)
Activity A:Peer
Editing Paraphrases(10 minutes)
Exchange your paraphrased paragraphs and peer edit
the paraphrase checking for accuracy to the original and plagiarism.Write
down any comments you have directly on the paraphrase.When
you are finished, return the paraphrase and discuss your comments with
your partner.
Activity B:Whole
Class Discussion(5 minutes)
How did it go?What
problems did you have?Now, what
are the differences between a paraphrase and a summary?(List
them on the board--perhaps have one column for "paraphrases" and the other
for "summaries."If you have already
gone over paraphrases, you just need to make one column)
Activity C:Summarizing
w/o Plagiarizing(15 minutes)
In the same group of two,compose a summary to the paragraph which you used to paraphrase for your homework, following the guidelines on the board and on page 532 in Simon & Schuster.
Activity D:Peer-editing Summaries(15 minutes)
Have each group exchange their summary with another
group.Peer-edit the summary checking
for accuracy to the original and plagiarism using the checklist on the
board and in the book.Groups should
write comments on the summaries and also discuss their findings aloud.
Homework:Revise
paraphrases and summaries to be turned in on Monday.Read
pages 72-81 which covers paragraphs in Simon & Schuster for the next
class period.Be prepared to define
the different elements of a paragraph.
Day 4
Activity A:Parts of Paragraph: Class Discussion(5 minutes)
Go over parts of paragraph using overhead.
Activity B:Piecing Together Paragraphs(8 minutes)
In groups of three, put the sentences from your paragraph
in order and label them correctly with:Topic
sentence, supporting sentences, and conclusion.(Teacher:go
around room and make sure they are correct and that they can identify the
different elements of the paragraph)
Activity C:Topic Sentences(15 minutes)
In the same groups, identify the topic sentences for each paragraph in the first three examples.In the last three examples, supply a topic sentence for the paragraph.
Activity D:Whole Class Discussion of Worksheet(10 minutes)
Have each group give answer and explanation for a
different one.(Also, have sample
ones/ the real ones? made up and on an easy-to-read overhead)Pass
out paragraph handout.
Activtiy E:Prep for Writing
Day 5
(In the Computer Lab somewhere if possible!!!)
Activity A:Get
everyone into a word processing program and review with them the proper
format that should be followed!! (Hand Out???)(10
minutes)Have them Save initially
so they can periodically save it as they write!!
Activity B:In-Class
Writing(30 minutes)
Activity C:Final
Saving & Spell Check Feature (hopefully) & Print Out if Possible
If print out is not possible, you save all papers
on 1 disk!!!Then, you can print
them out and comment on them for the next class period.
Homework:None!!!Handout???
Day 6
Activity A:Discussion:Editing/Revising & Higher Order/Lower Order Concerns(15 minutes)
Make lists on board, etc.Then,
have samples from their paragraphs and/or diagnostics as examples of different
types of errors.
Activity B:How
I comment on your papers and grade your essays-explanation(10
minutes)
Handouts:Correction
Symbols and Grading sheet
Activity C:Students reread papers and make comments of their own, asking questions.(Remaining Time)
(Make some general comments on them before you hand
them back, but don't make specific ones!!)Answer
any questions while they are doing this.
Homework:Rewrite
paragraph for Monday.These will
be graded.If you get lower than
a C, you may rewrite.Also, when
you hand it in, at the bottom of your paper, I want you1)to
identify two higher and two lower order concerns that you think you need
to work on.We will be having conferences
next week and this will help you think about specific goals you want to
set!!!!
