Effective Fall semester 2008, the Division of English as an
International Language has merged with the Department of Linguistics.
The MATESL program will continue to be offered in its current form
through the the Department of Linguistics.
Specifically, admission procedures, course requirements, graduation
requirements and the degree awarded (MA in Teaching English as a
second Language) will all be the same. In addition, students who
obtain a MATESL degree and who wish to obtain a doctorate will be
able
to apply for admission to the PhD program in the Department of
Linguistics, which has added a new area of concentration in Second
Language Studies. Requirements for this new PhD specialization may be
